Matt Semerad’s career began in the field as an electrician with IBEW Local 110 and a laborer with LIUNA Local 563, giving him firsthand experience of the challenges and demands faced on job sites. Building on this foundation, he transitioned into a project management path, contributing to construction management accommodations for the I-35W Bridge project—a landmark effort in Minnesota’s construction history. Over the past two decades, Matt has grown into leadership roles across heavy civil and signature bridge projects, with a specialization in safety, quality, and technology integration.
Matt’s current work emphasizes construction technology adoption, advanced safety training, and AI in construction. He leads educational programs that simplify complex topics—like robotics, artificial intelligence, and safety management systems—into real-world applications contractors can use right away. His consulting practice helps organizations transition smoothly into future-ready practices without losing sight of practical field realities.
Known for his engaging, conversational style, Matt blends technical expertise with real-world storytelling. He encourages open discussion, uses case studies, and prioritizes practical takeaways over abstract theory. Students consistently remark that his sessions are approachable yet thought-provoking, with just the right balance of humor and depth.
Outside of teaching and consulting, Matt is an avid outdoorsman—a sailor working toward his intercoastal captain’s license, an ice fisherman, open-water fisherman, and hunter. A former Eagle Scout and Army JROTC cadet, he credits these formative experiences with instilling discipline, leadership, and resilience—qualities that continue to guide his professional and personal pursuits.
